Successful Treatment of Heart Attack Patient at Nepal Medical College

Kathmandu - A life-threatening heart attack patient has been successfully treated at Nepal Medical College by a team led by cardiologist Dr. Arjun Budhathoki. The patient, Vijay Tamang from Kavrepalanchok, was brought to Kathmandu after suffering from severe breathing problems since July 26.

Initially admitted to Patan Hospital, he was given electric shocks to stabilize his heartbeat. However, due to the unavailability of ventilator and ICU facilities, he was referred to Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre and later taken to a private hospital in Thapathali. The family, dependent on farming for livelihood, could not afford the private hospital expenses, and eventually, Tamang was admitted to Nepal Medical College on July 27.

“When he arrived, his survival chance was only about 20 percent. By the morning of July 28, his condition was extremely critical. Still, we didn’t give up,” Dr. Budhathoki said. Tamang underwent intensive care, was put on dialysis twice, and after 10 days of treatment, his condition improved significantly. He has now been discharged.

Expressing gratitude while leaving the hospital, Tamang promised to quit alcohol, which had been a major contributor to his deteriorating health. “I never thought I would survive, but the doctors saved me. I will never drink again,” he said.

Dr. Budhathoki, who previously worked at Bir Hospital and Shahid Gangalal Heart Centre, warned that smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, diabetes, and excessive fatty food greatly increase the risk of heart disease. He emphasized that a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise can help prevent heart problems.

Nepal Medical College has announced plans to soon establish an advanced Cath Lab and introduce the latest technologies to enhance the quality of its cardiac treatment services.
