Dr. Sunil Sharma Announces Free Surgeries for One Thousand Patients
Kathmandu: Nepali Congress leader and medical entrepreneur Sunil Sharma has announced that he will provide 1,000 free major surgeries for financially underprivileged patients.
Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and leadership handover program of the GP Koirala Foundation on Friday, Sharma announced that 1,000 major operations would be performed free of cost within this year at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) in Duwakot and Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar for patients unable to afford medical treatment due to financial constraints.
"Unless there is a shortage of patients, we want to announce that 1,000 major operations will be conducted free of cost at Kathmandu Medical College's Duwakot branch and Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar for those who cannot afford treatment," he said.
Dr. Sharma also stated that he plans to advance scholarship programs in the coming days. He added that further announcements would be made after discussions with the Foundation’s President, Sujata Koirala. On Friday, Koirala handed over the responsibility of the Foundation's leadership to Dr. Sharma.
During the event, Sharma recalled his long political and personal relationship with Girija Prasad Koirala. He mentioned that he had received his general membership of the Nepali Congress with Girija Prasad Koirala's signature.
Recalling how Girija Prasad Koirala supported him in entering the medical sector, Sharma noted that Koirala played a significant role in securing affiliation for Nobel Medical College.
Sharma claimed that Koirala helped secure the medical college's affiliation without seeking any personal benefit from them. He stated that he received immense inspiration and support from Koirala not only in politics but also in his professional business endeavors.
Sharma expressed his commitment to continuing Girija Prasad Koirala's legacy by expanding various activities across all 77 districts of the country through the Foundation.
Furthermore, Sharma emphasized the need to embrace BP Koirala’s teachings of revolting against injustice and the dominance of the elite within the Nepali Congress.
Referring to party President Gagan Thapa as the political continuation of BP Koirala and Girija Prasad Koirala, he added that the Congress party must move forward with new energy and enthusiasm.
