On Guru Purnima, Actress Mithila Sharma Honours Artists in the Name of Her Gurus

Kathmandu – Renowned actress and classical dance artist Mithila Sharma celebrated Guru Purnima by honoring various senior artists from different disciplines of art in the name of her own mentors. Through the Nepal Former Police Artists Association, where she serves as a senior advisor, Sharma presented special recognitions dedicated to her gurus who contributed to her journey in acting, singing, and dance.
At the association’s first annual celebration and the second “Creative Tribute Awards” event held at the Nepal Police Club in Exhibition Road, Sharma established and conferred the awards in the names of her gurus as a gesture of Guru Dakshina.
In the ceremony:
- Veteran choreographer Basanta Shrestha received the Rajpal Thapa Dance Dedication Award 2082,
- Writer Raman Ghimire was honored with the Chetan Karki Lyric Literature Award 2082,
- Veteran music composer Prakash Gurung received the Gopal Yonjan Music Dedication Award 2082,
- And veteran artist Basundhara Bhusal was awarded the Hada & Pal Humorous Literature Award 2082.
Since composer Prakash Gurung was abroad, his son Rajay Gurung accepted the award on his behalf.
Chief Guest Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa, former IGP Motilal Bohora, veteran actor Harihar Sharma, actresses Bhuwan Chand, Chaitya Devi, Mithila Sharma, and Gauri Malla, among others, presented the honors during the event.
In an emotional speech, Mithila Sharma shared, “I am deeply moved to stand here today and honour my gurus in the place I was born. I have established these awards in the name of my mentors—Chetan Karki, Gopal Yonjan, Rajpal Thapa, and Dhruba Ratna Hada—as a token of Guru Dakshina. One cannot repay the debt of parents and gurus, but doing something in their name feels like receiving their eternal blessings.”
Addressing the gathering, IGP Deepak Thapa praised the program as not just an anniversary celebration but a creative and inspirational event. He pledged institutional and personal support to the association.
Speaking on behalf of the honorees, actress Basundhara Bhusal recalled meeting her husband at the Police Club in 2023 while performing a dance and expressed her emotions upon being honored in the same venue. “Back then, little Mithila was a child artist. Today, being honored by her in this very hall is incredibly moving,” she said. “In the past, I was often mocked for being a comedienne. Receiving such a prestigious recognition from this very field now feels more meaningful than many other honors.”
She further added, “Mithila has shown such grace in not even revealing the monetary value of the award. I will keep the envelope unopened, as a heartfelt tribute to my mentors.”
The event also featured musical and dance performances by members of the Police Artists Association.
