Nepal Medical College Nurses Trained in Stoma Care
Kathmandu – Nurses at Nepal Medical College were provided with stoma care training. The college conducted this training as part of its Continuous Nursing Education program to enhance the skills and capabilities of its nursing staff regarding stoma care.
The training was provided by the college's hospital director, Prof. Dr. Nilmani Upadhyay, along with Prof. Dr. Nabin Pokhrel (GI Surgeon), Prof. Dr. Krishna Kaji Bhumi (Uro Surgeon), Associate Professor Dr. Prakash Paudel, MCh GI Surgeon Dr. Gonish Hoda, and Nursing Matron Nabina Singh.
During the training, specialists from the GI Surgery, Urology, and Nursing departments provided detailed guidance on the principles and best practices of stoma management to the nurses.
The training covered subjects including the types of stomas and their indications, pre-operative and post-operative stoma assessment, the basic principles of stoma site marking and skin care, stoma appliance selection, fitting and troubleshooting, common complications and their management, patient counseling and long-term follow-up, and the multidisciplinary approach to stoma care.
In the process, each topic was presented with case-based discussions and real-world examples from surgical practice, which helped the participants easily connect theoretical knowledge with practical situations.
The hands-on training is expected to increase the clinical competence and confidence of the nurses. The practical sessions demonstrated the correct method for applying and removing the appliance, included practice on stoma models and simulation manikins, covered techniques for preventing skin damage/excoriation and hygiene, offered practice in managing complex stoma cases, and featured step-by-step demonstrations of emergency stoma care.
Participants reported that the training not only helped new nurses gain fundamental practical skills but also fostered an environment where experienced instructors could share advanced techniques. The college routinely provides clinical training and education to its working nurses and staff.
