Nepal’s First Transgender-Centric Film “Gunyeu Cholo: The Dress” Released

Kathmandu: The film “Gunyeu Cholo: The Dress” was released yesterday, marking its official public screening. Released as a Friday premiere, the film has already received positive responses from audiences.

The production team is confident that viewers will enjoy the film, given the praise for Nazir Hussain’s performance in the trailer and songs.

Directed by Samundra Bhatt, “Gunyeu Cholo” tells the story of a gender minority, focusing on a paralymic/transgender character. Nazir Hussain plays the lead role of a trans woman in the film.

Alongside him, the film features Sanchita Luintel, Sushil Sitoula, Rajkumar Ghosh, Shishir Rana, Anupam Shrestha, and Bishal Pahari in key roles.

As Nepal’s first fully transgender-focused story, the film’s international distribution rights have been acquired by Buffalo ATL in the United States.

All post-production work for the film was completed abroad in Hollywood style, including editing, color grading, sound mixing, sound design, and background music. Lisa Gerrard, known for her work in the Hollywood film Gladiator 2, provided the vocals, while Marcelo di Francesci composed the background score.

The film is a collaboration between Nepali and Hollywood production houses. Investors include Akash Budhathoki and V-Bhance Janubon, with executive producers Jeffrey J. Wayne and Steve Johnston, and Anupam Shrestha as co-producer.

Cinematography was done by Alok Shukla, and the songs were written by Lekhu Sahayatri. The film was also selected for the prestigious American Film Market.najir-2-1756537325.jpg
