Floods and Landslides Disrupt Major Highways: What’s Blocked, What’s Open?

Kathmandu: Major highways across various parts of the country have been severely affected by floods and landslides. According to data collected by the Nepal Police as of Friday at 6:00 AM, roads in several locations are completely blocked, while one-way or partial traffic has been restored in others.

In Bagmati Province, potential flood risks along the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the B.P. Highway have prompted authorities to permit only cargo vehicles up to 10 tons to operate between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM. For other vehicles, travel is strictly allowed between 4:00 AM and 7:00 PM following situational evaluations. Meanwhile, all major highways in Rasuwa district remain completely closed due to flooding. In Nuwakot, traffic on the Tokha–Chhahare road section at Ghattekhola, Shivapuri Rural Municipality–8, is restricted from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM owing to flood and landslide hazards, while the Pasang Lhamu highway at Simtar, Bidur–10, is fully blocked by floodwaters. Over in Dhading, the Prithvi Highway has been reopened for one-way traffic after debris was cleared from landslides at Jawang Khola and Sheetal Bazar in Benighat Rorang.

Road conditions vary across other provinces as well. In Koshi Province, one-way traffic has been restored along the Madan Bhandari Highway near the suspension bridge in Triyuga Municipality–7, Udayapur, following landslide clearance. In Gandaki Province, the Chame–Besisahar road section is completely halted after a landslide struck Khotro in Nasong Rural Municipality–3. Similarly, in Karnali Province, travel is entirely disrupted along the Karnali Corridor due to a landslide at Kharikhet in Sarkegad Rural Municipality–6, Humla.

Police report that clearance operations are actively underway for blocked stretches. Authorities strongly urge travelers passing through vulnerable zones to confirm the latest updates with local police or regional administration before starting their journey.
