Greenland’s Political Leaders Reject Becoming Part of the United States
Kathmandu. Leaders of all political parties in Greenland have issued a joint statement clearly stating that they do not want to become American. In the statement jointly released on Friday, it is said that Greenland’s future should be decided by the people of Greenland themselves.
According to Denmark’s state broadcaster DR, the joint statement says that Greenlandic party leaders have demanded an end to the disrespectful behavior that the United States has been showing toward their country. “We, the leaders of Greenland’s political parties, once again express our desire that the disregard shown by the United States toward our country must now come to an end,” the statement reads.
The party leaders clarified that Greenland will continue cooperation with the United States and other Western countries in the coming days. However, they stressed that any steps regarding Greenland’s future must be taken in accordance with international law and the Self-Government Act, and only after discussion and agreement with the people of Greenland. The joint statement has been signed by the leaders of all political parties represented in Greenland’s parliament.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday made a controversial remark, saying that there would be an agreement for the United States to acquire Greenland “one way or another, easy or hard.” He said he would do something about the issue regardless of whether the people of Greenland want it or not.
Greenland is a former colony of Denmark. In 1953, it became an integral part of the Danish state, and in 1979 it was granted self-government. However, authority over foreign policy and defense remains under Denmark. Currently, the United States also has a military base in Greenland.
Since assuming office in January 2025, President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to take control of Greenland. He has not ruled out the possibility of using “military or economic pressure” to achieve this goal.
