Five Killed in Cargo Plane Crash at Miami Airport

Kathmandu: Five people have been killed and five others injured after a 21 Air cargo plane operating for Amazon skidded off the runway and crashed while landing at Miami International Airport in Florida, USA.

According to US media outlet CNN, the accident occurred on Sunday at around 2:00 PM local time. The aircraft overshot the runway, struck several vehicles, and caught fire.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah stated that three of the injured are in critical condition and have been transferred to a trauma center, while the other two are receiving treatment at a local hospital. Rescue workers extracted several people who were trapped inside the vehicles struck by the plane.

More than 60 fire engines and rescue teams were deployed following the crash. Officials said safety operations and fire control efforts are ongoing due to a fuel leak at the scene.

Expressing grief over the incident, Amazon extended its condolences to the families of the deceased. The company noted that the crash occurred during a landing attempt and stated it will fully cooperate with the investigation. The aircraft involved was a 32-year-old Boeing 767 arriving in Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft overshot Runway 30—which is over 9,000 feet long—during its landing attempt. Work has been underway to clear obstructions from the runway following the crash.

Officials reported that while no major debris was found on the runway itself, the aircraft damaged navigation equipment as it veered off course. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Although the ground stop at the airport has been lifted, the FAA indicated that some flights may experience delays through Monday as the aircraft remains stuck near the runway. — ANI
