IMEC Necessary to Remove Energy Dependence on Iranian Chokepoints: Trump

Kathmandu — US President Donald Trump has stated that the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) has the strong support of his administration. During a meeting with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Arab nations on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said that attacks on commercial vessels along routes connected to Iran highlight the need to shift Middle Eastern energy infrastructure away from Iranian chokepoints.

He noted that IMEC will be crucial for safely transporting oil and energy supplies via pipelines or other alternative routes. Claiming that the Middle East is reaching a stage where it can overcome decades-long challenges, Trump added that the United States is working with its partners to make the region safer and more prosperous.

Announced in 2023, IMEC’s eastern corridor aims to connect India with the Gulf region, while the northern corridor will link the Gulf region to Europe. It includes railways, a ship-to-rail transit network, and road transport infrastructure. Meanwhile, Trump reiterated his warning delivered at the UN General Assembly, urging Iran to make the right decision promptly.
