Gagan Thapa Participates in Asia Climate Summit in Thailand, Shares Nepal’s Carbon Trade Opportunities

Kathmandu – Nepali Congress leader and Member of Parliament Gagan Thapa has returned to Nepal after participating in the Asia Climate Summit held in Thailand. After the event, he took to social media to share insights on Nepal's potential in carbon trading and climate finance.
In the summit, Thapa emphasized the importance of ensuring fair and equal benefits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement’s carbon trading mechanism. Referring to Nepal’s past experience with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), he said the country failed to gain expected benefits and stressed the need to avoid repeating those mistakes this time.
“Nepal holds great potential to access development finance through carbon credits,” Thapa stated. “Our forests, renewable energy sources, and sustainable projects can significantly contribute to the global carbon market.”
Through his social media post, Thapa also noted that various countries and companies expressed strong interest in working with the Government of Nepal and the private sector. However, he warned that the issue is time-sensitive and that Nepal must act quickly and efficiently to take full advantage.
“We must not delay any further. It’s time for Nepal to actively engage in carbon trading with clear preparation,” he wrote on social media.
