Film Sector 2025: High Business Despite Adverse Conditions

Kathmandu: The year 2025 was a significant period for the Nepali film industry, marked by popular stories and hit songs. From a commercial standpoint, Nepali movies achieved remarkable sales over the past year.

According to the Film Development Board, 154 films—including both domestic and foreign releases—were shown in Nepali theaters between January 1 and December 19, 2025.

During this time, more than eighteen films achieved impressive sales, while others saw average results. The biggest hit at the Nepali box office was the blockbuster film Paran, which earned Rs. 176.8 million.

This film even outperformed foreign movies in terms of total earnings. Another major success was Jerry On Top, which was released on October 17 and earned Rs 122.9 million after staying in theaters for a long time.

Early in the year, the social drama Unko Sweater received a very positive response from the audience and collected Rs 114.3 million. Additionally, the film Anjila had a strong run, bringing in 89.5 million at the box office.

While these four films were highly successful, some movies expected to do well during the Dashain and Tihar festivals suffered due to the impact of the Gen-Z protests.

In the foreign film category, three Indian movies performed well in Nepal. Kantara became the highest-grossing foreign film, followed by Saiyara, which earned Rs102 million. These earnings were comparable to those of the biggest Nepali hits.

Another Indian film, Dhurandhar, is currently in theaters and has collected Rs 91.3 million. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Indian film Nari Shakti had the lowest sales, with only 45 tickets sold for a total of 4,150.
