Aerial Rescue of Mother and Newborn After Complex Obstetric Complications

Kathmandu. Under the Aerial Rescue Program operated through the National Women Empowerment Project under the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender & Sexual Minorities, and Social Security, a postpartum woman and her newborn baby from Mugu have been rescued by air.

Deepa Bhandari, a 38-year-old resident of Ratapani, Khatyad Rural Municipality-11, Mugu, developed complex health complications after giving birth at a local health facility. As the health status of both the mother and the newborn baby became critical, they were airlifted via a Nepal Army aircraft to the well-equipped Provincial Hospital in Surkhet for further treatment.

The Ministry has been operating the aerial rescue program to provide timely specialist healthcare services to pregnant and postpartum women in remote and geographically difficult areas. The program is proving to be effective in saving the lives of mothers and newborns during emergency and complex obstetric situations, ensuring access to safe medical treatment.
