BLA Shifts from Rebels to Terrorist Group, Threatening Stability

For decades, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) was called a "separatist rebel group." However, experts say this label is no longer accurate. What started as a political movement has turned into a dangerous terrorist network that uses violence against civilians and infrastructure.

Recent attacks, including a train hijacking and major city bombings, show that the BLA now focuses on causing mass casualties and fear. This marks a major shift from its early days when the group mostly targeted the military. Specialized units within the group now operate like modern terrorist cells rather than traditional freedom fighters.

Polls and studies show a massive gap between what the BLA wants and what ordinary people in Balochistan actually care about. Most locals say their main worries are a lack of jobs, poor government services, and corruption, not breaking away from Pakistan.

To fund its activities, the BLA has turned to organized crime, including smuggling, extortion, and kidnapping. It also works with other militant groups like the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) for quick tactical gains.

Furthermore, the BLA has become a tool in regional political rivalries. The group regularly targets Chinese workers and major economic projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Backed by foreign intelligence and safe havens across the border, the BLA now acts as a spoiler to hurt Pakistan's economy.

Analysts argue that calling the BLA a "separatist movement" gives unearned political cover to a group that relies on terror.
