Gagan Kumar Thapa Emphasizes All-Party Consensus for Political Stability
Kathmandu — Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has publicly shared his view that the country's current political and constitutional crisis must be resolved through an all-party consensus. This statement from General Secretary Thapa aligns with the demands being raised by Gen Z movement leaders Rabi Kiran Hamal and Miraj Dhungana.
The leaders of the Gen Z movement have maintained that political stability, good governance, and constitutional solutions are only possible by establishing a broad consensus between civil society leaders, political parties, and the groups involved in the rebellion. Standing on the same ground, General Secretary Thapa has also signaled that the current crisis cannot be solved through old political practices.
Following the Gen Z rebellion led by the new generation on September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23 and 24), the current government has appeared unsuccessful in addressing issues of stability, good governance, restructuring of state organs, and political accountability. In this context, analysts believe the perspectives of the Gen Z leaders and the Congress General Secretary have met at the same point.
Gen Z leader Rabi Kiran Hamal stated that he views the General Secretary of a major party like the Nepali Congress bringing forward the agenda of all-party consensus as a positive move.
He said, "We have been saying continuously that there must be an all-party consensus, restructuring of public institutions is necessary, and changes in the governance system and election process are essential for political stability. Today, Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has raised the same issues, and we welcome this."
In a recently released video message, General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa expressed that the issues raised during the Gen Z rebellion can be moved forward through all-party consensus. His statement is being seen as a sign of potential dialogue and cooperation between established political parties and emerging political forces.
According to political analysts, the fact that mainstream parties have started taking the issues raised by the Gen Z movement seriously indicates that Nepal's political transition is entering a new phase. The debate over all-party consensus is expected to create an environment for rethinking the governance structure, the election system, and the way the state is run in the coming days.
