‘Traffic Police CCTV Control Room Reconstruction’ Project Moving Ahead: NRNA

Kathmandu. The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) has expressed objection to some media reports linking its president, Mahesh Kumar Shrestha, with allegations of misusing the organization’s name. The NRNA said it is unfortunate that at a time when it is working with the Government of Nepal to help reconstruct public property, attempts are being made to spread misinformation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NRNA spokesperson Gangadhar Gautam recalled the damage caused to major public properties during the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9 and clarified that the association is ready to cooperate with the government in reconstruction. According to him, the NRNA has already started working to strengthen road safety by assisting the traffic police and is in regular coordination with the concerned authorities.
However, the association strongly objected to media reports claiming that money was being raised in the NRNA’s name for private purposes. The statement read, “The news that funds were collected for individual interests is entirely baseless and misleading. It is merely an attempt to undermine the reputation of the organization.” The association described such reports as part of a smear campaign.
President Mahesh Kumar Shrestha said that Saturday’s executive committee meeting will formally approve the ‘Traffic Police CCTV Control Room Reconstruction’ project. A detailed technical plan has already been prepared, with an estimated cost of around NPR 7.4 million.
According to Shrestha, in the first phase, the NRNA will help re-operate the CCTV control room, monitoring system, and essential equipment at the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office. “Strengthening road safety and surveillance systems is directly linked to the country’s peace and security. Contributing to this is our duty toward the motherland,” Shrestha emphasized.
On Tuesday, the NRNA had already announced the ‘Nepal Reconstruction Campaign,’ calling on Nepalis around the world to extend their support. Recalling the NRNA’s continued assistance during past crises such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and the pandemic, Shrestha said this is another moment when the motherland must be uplifted with collective effort.
“Let us all unite to rebuild Nepal, restore protective structures, and bring back hope in our communities,” Shrestha appealed.
He further urged everyone not to believe in rumors, saying, “Our contribution is purely focused on public interest, and linking it to personal benefits is unfortunate.” The association stated that a concrete action plan will be made public after the executive committee meeting on Saturday.
