Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s Address on the 76th National Democracy Day
Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has reminded that the 2007 BS revolution was not merely a change in governance, but an announcement of the self-respect, rights, and dignity of the Nepali people.
Addressing the main ceremony of National Democracy Day 2082 on Thursday, she evaluated the 2007 BS revolution as a great day that transformed subjects into citizens, noting that the foundation of today's Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal lies in that very revolution.
"The 2007 BS revolution was not just a change of regime. It was an announcement of the self-respect, rights, and dignity of the Nepali people. That Falgun 7 was a great day that turned us from subjects into citizens. The foundation of today's Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is also the political revolution of 2007 BS," she said.
Pointing out that we must engage in self-reflection while celebrating Democracy Day, Prime Minister Karki stated, "Even though equality is written in the Constitution, discrimination and inequality persist in practice."
She pointed out that the public is dissatisfied due to the dominance of a limited class in power, monopolies over resources, and unequal practices within state structures.
Citing the events of the youth-led ‘Gen Z Movement’ on Bhadra 23–24 as an example, she mentioned that the voice of discontent should not be suppressed but rather embraced as an opportunity for reform.
She emphasized that democracy is not just a process but a system that delivers results, and its real impact should be visible in the lives of common people.
She said, "The movement led by Gen Z youth on Bhadra 23 and 24 was a question posed to structures that failed to listen to public grievances. That movement sought an end to corruption, nepotism, and discrimination. It sought good governance and social justice. Toward this, the state must not only be liberal but also humble and dutiful."
Prime Minister Karki informed that preparations are underway to conduct the House of Representatives elections, scheduled for Falgun 21 this year, in a clean, fair, peaceful, and fearless environment.
She also expressed confidence that the upcoming Parliament and government will advance democracy as a more vibrant, result-oriented, and accountable system.
