Why did BT Kancha make the series 'Harami'?

Kathmandu.

The web series 'Harami,' written and directed by Biswas Timsina—well-known among audiences by his nickname BT Kancha for his interesting reviews of Nepali films and content—is being broadcast weekly on the video platform YouTube. Produced in five episodes, this series is released every Friday, with each episode lasting about 25 minutes.

While YouTube series in Nepal often focus on the struggles of daughters and women, BT Kancha has presented content with a different flavor targeted at young viewers. The series 'Harami' moves beyond domestic drama to focus on the lifestyle, thoughts, and relationships of the younger generation.

BT Kancha says that the episodes broadcast so far are receiving positive feedback. According to him, the response to the second and third episodes has been even better than the first.

The story of the series revolves around the lives of three young men living in a flat, showcasing various dimensions of love, career, and relationships. An effort has been made to cover a different theme in each episode.

While talking about the inspiration behind 'Harami,' BT Kancha revealed that the idea came from the life of one of the series' characters, Nikun Shrestha. When BT came to Nepal from Kalimpong, he stayed at Nikun's house.

Since Nikun's parents were in America, BT saw him living alone and leading a carefree life with like-minded friends, which formed the basis for the series.

He said that the idea of living in a flat came while staying at Nikun’s place, and he put the souls of his friends from India into the characters Hari and Milan.

He explained that it is an attempt to present the small turning points in the lives of these three characters as a narrative. BT Kancha mentioned that 'Harami' was born out of his desire to bring youth-centric content to Nepal, as he was influenced by content from Indian YouTube channels like TVF and Dice Media.

Nikun Shrestha, one of the actors in the series, was also involved in this plan from the beginning. According to him, the idea to make 'Harami' had existed since 2020. Nikun, who is associated with Man Productions, is also the executive producer. He said that although there was a delay due to COVID-19, the plan finally became a reality in 2025.

Nikun says that there was a plan to make a youth-centric series during the COVID period, but the company later became active in film production.

He added that after meeting BT later on, 'Harami' was prepared in its current form. He shared that Safal KC and Pratik Gurung were also connected to the project from the start; both are the writers and directors of the film 'Hari.' Nikun appears in the series as both an actor and a producer.

He shared his experience that although handling both responsibilities was difficult, he received great support from the cast and crew. He mentioned the presence of celebrity guest artists in every episode and the easy shooting environment as special experiences.

So far, Anna Sharma and Ayushman Desraj Joshi have appeared as guest artists in the series. The production team stated that celebrity artists will also appear in the fourth and fifth episodes.

The regular cast of the series includes Nikun Shrestha along with Rishikesh Bashyal, Shashank Bohora, Rakshya Thapa, and Gaumaya Gurung.

The production company is preparing to conclude the fifth episode of the series with a special program and has also moved forward with plans to bring a second season.
