Aarati Budha: From Humla’s Hills to the World of Nepali Entertainment

Yet, geographical distance has never been enough to limit the dreams of those who dare to dream beyond their surroundings. From this remote Himalayan district, artist Aarati Budha is steadily making her way into Nepal’s entertainment industry, carrying with her a dream that has grown far beyond the boundaries of her birthplace.

For Aarati, modelling and acting are not merely about standing in front of a camera or appearing on screen. They are forms of self-expression, a means of creating her own identity and a continuous journey toward turning her aspirations into reality.

Building a career in Nepal’s competitive entertainment industry is challenging for anyone, but for an artist coming from a remote district like Humla, the journey can be even more demanding. The discipline of theatre gradually helped Aarati become more confident and comfortable in front of the camera. For her, acting is not a short-term attraction or simply a glamorous profession. It is a craft that demands constant practice, learning and self-improvement.

Her journey has also been closely connected with music videos, particularly Sudurpashchim’s Deuda music tradition. Aarati has appeared in dozens of Deuda music videos as an actor and model, giving her the opportunity to represent the distinctive cultural atmosphere of the region through visual storytelling.

Deuda is not simply a form of music. It is deeply connected with the culture, lifestyle, traditions and emotions of Sudurpashchim. Through her performances, Aarati has become part of that cultural expression while also expanding her presence among audiences.

Her work in music videos has helped her develop important skills in camera facing, expressions, body language and adapting her performance according to the mood and requirements of a scene. What initially began as an effort to find opportunities gradually developed into a more focused artistic journey. An actor must communicate through voice, movement, emotion and physical presence while responding directly to a live audience.

That experience has further strengthened Aarati’s acting foundation. If music videos introduced her to the camera, theatre gave her a deeper understanding of performance. Together, these experiences have helped her move toward another important destination, the world of Nepali cinema.

Aarati has also received various awards and honours for her work in theatre and music videos. For an artist, recognition can provide encouragement and establish confidence, but Aarati views such honours not as the end of her journey but as motivation to work harder.

With her experience in modelling, music videos and theatre, Aarati’s artistic journey is now extending into Nepali films. She is working on different film projects and gradually expanding her range as a performer.

Film presents a different challenge from music videos. While a music video may require an artist to communicate an emotion within a limited number of scenes, cinema demands a deeper understanding of character, story and continuity. A character must develop according to the narrative, making every film a new learning experience.

For Aarati, the goal is therefore not simply to be seen on the big screen. Her ambition is to become an actress who can bring different characters to life and create an emotional connection with audiences.
