Security Tightened at Nepal-India Border for Upcoming Elections

Biratnagar. In view of the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5 (Falgun 21), security arrangements at the Nepal-India border will be tightened. To ensure the fairness and peaceful environment of the election, it has been decided to completely close the border crossings for 72 hours.

A joint meeting between security chiefs from Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts of Koshi Province on the Nepal side and security officials from Kishanganj, Araria, and Supaul districts on the Indian side reached this agreement.

According to the agreement, the border crossings will remain closed from the night of March 2 (Falgun 18) until the night of March 5 (Falgun 21). During this period, all types of movement except for essential services will be prohibited.

According to the administration, this decision is expected to be effective in preventing undesirable activities, illegal entry, and potential interference from across the border during the election.

Saroj Koirala, Assistant Chief District Officer of Morang, informed that cooperation has been requested from Indian security agencies to stop the uncontrolled entry of Indian-plated vehicles during the election campaign.

The meeting also agreed to increase joint patrolling in the border area, stop the unauthorized movement of third-country nationals, and tighten controls on drug trafficking, human trafficking, counterfeit currency transactions, and the smuggling of weapons and illegal cash.
