‘Rimai’ to Release from Bhadra 20: A Story of Gurung Culture on Screen

Pokhara — The Nepali film ‘Rimai’, which centers on the lifestyle, traditions, and emotions of the Gurung community, is set to release nationwide from September 5. The movie stars Dayahang Rai, Rishma Gurung, Arpan Thapa, and Maotse Gurung in lead roles.

At a press conference held in Pokhara, the cast and production team shared details about the film. Maotse Gurung highlighted that the film represents an indigenous story, made possible by the audience’s interest in authentic narratives. He also explained that the word “Rimai” in the Gurung language is used to address daughters.

Lead actress Rishma Gurung described the film as very special to her. She said that she had initially declined the offer due to being in the United States, but now that circumstances allowed, she is happy to portray Gurung traditions on the big screen.

Actor Dibi Gurung expressed confidence that the movie reflects not only the Gurung community but also the broader Nepali way of life. Executive producer Birbal Ghale added that ‘Rimai’ is a blend of authentic storytelling, culture, and performance, produced with an investment of around NPR 3 crore. The shooting mainly took place in Gurung villages and hill settlements to closely depict rural lifestyles and traditions.

Special attention was given to the music, incorporating traditional Gurung melodies and rhythms. Written by Upendra Subba and directed by Khil Bahadur Gurung, the film is expected to give audiences a taste of authentic culture. Both the production team and the actors are optimistic that ‘Rimai’ will mark a distinctive chapter in Nepali cinema.
