Election Commission Initiates Proportional Representation Percentage Determination Based on Population
The Election Commission in Kathmandu has begun the process of determining the percentage for the proportional representation system based on population demographics.
This determination is being made for the Dalit, Indigenous Nationalities (Aadibasi/Janajati), Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim groups, in accordance with the provisions made by the House of Representatives Member Constituency Act, 2074.
To ensure representation of the inclusive groups based on population, a six-member committee has been formed.
The committee is coordinated by Joint Secretary Subash Kumar Bhattarai of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and includes representatives from the Election Commission, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, and the National Statistics Office.
The committee has been tasked with determining the inclusive base percentage based on the National Census and submitting its report within three days, as informed by spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.
The EC is preparing to set the percentages based on the data from the National Census, 2078 BS.
For this purpose, a discussion was held among EC officials, including Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and Election Commissioner Dr. Janaki Tuladhar, along with Home Minister Omprakash Aryal, Chief Secretary Suman Raj Aryal, Home Secretary Rameshwar Dangal, and Chief Statistics Officer Madhusudan Burlakoti, according to EC spokesperson Bhattarai.
