Preservation of Culture and Identity: PM Karki’s Call to Value Tradition
Kathmandu, December 21: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has emphasized that we must not forget our traditions and culture. While stating that harmful practices within culture should be gradually eliminated, she stressed that our original traditions and ethnic attire should not be abandoned.
She shared these views during a meeting today with a delegation from the Tamu Hyul Chhyonj Dhi (Gurung National Council). The representatives of the council arrived for the meeting dressed in traditional Gurung attire.
Praising their dress, the Prime Minister expressed the opinion that it would be appropriate for employees in government offices to wear their traditional attire at least one day a week.
According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, she remarked:
"Many societies today are in search of their identity. It is observed that people are forgetting their originality in the name of modernity. They do not even know what their true identity is.
However, we Nepalis have plenty of 'our own-ness.' We have diverse original cultures and traditions. These must be protected. Perhaps we should even think about arranging for such attire to be worn in government offices once or twice a week?"
On that occasion, the General Secretary of the Council, Raju Gurung, invited the Prime Minister to attend the special program for Tamu Lhosar scheduled to be held on Poush 15.
