PM Karki Mentions Efforts to Change University Chancellor System

Kathmandu. Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that serious consultations and homework are being carried out to revise the provision of the Prime Minister being the Chancellor of the university.

Addressing the 51st Convocation of Tribhuvan University on Thursday, Prime Minister Karki, who is also the Chancellor, said that efforts from all sides are necessary to end the situation of party interference and make the university a place for academic debate. Similarly, she expressed the view that there is a need to increase investment in education.

She said, "There is a need to increase investment in education in Nepal. Along with this, the efforts of all parties are necessary to end the situation of party interference heard in this sector and make the university a place for academic debate. 

Understanding that party interference in educational administration has continuously affected Nepal's higher education sector, we have started some concrete steps. The need to revise the arrangement where the Prime Minister is the Chancellor of the university has been realized. Serious consultation and homework are being done on this matter."

Likewise, Prime Minister Karki emphasized the need to add new and practical educational programs according to the times while maintaining excellence in educational quality. 

"In a situation where a large portion of Nepali students are going abroad for higher education, I see that stakeholders should pay sufficient attention to the issue of adding new and practical educational programs according to the times while maintaining excellence in educational quality," she said. 

Mentioning that she has heard complaints from students that exam results do not come on time, she said that stakeholders should find the answer as to why such a situation arose.
