Party Unity Is in the Interest of the Nation: Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has made it clear that moving toward party division and internal conflict is not in the interest of the Nepali Congress, the Nepali people, or the country.

Speaking to journalists after the Central Working Committee meeting held on Tuesday, spokesperson Mahat said that the party leadership has been showing flexibility for a long time and has been making continuous efforts to maintain unity.

He stated that despite decisions by the Central Executive Committee and the plan to hold a regular general convention, the organization of a special convention has led the leadership to engage in continuous dialogue and discussions to maintain understanding within the party.

“We are clear that the party must move forward united on the eve of the general elections. There is no confusion about holding a regular general convention after the elections and selecting new leadership,” he said. “This is not the time for division, but for unity.”

Mahat informed that the party leadership has urged that activities being carried out in the name of a special convention should not be taken in the wrong direction. According to him, the leadership still believes that a positive solution can be reached through dialogue.

“Even in the meeting, efforts were made to seek consensus through dialogue before taking any decision. That is why the meeting concluded informally,” he said, adding, “We will meet again tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. We hope a positive outcome will emerge even before that.”

Highlighting the Nepali Congress as a major pillar of democracy, spokesperson Mahat warned that if the party becomes weak, both the country and democracy will also become weak.
“No new or other party can provide the level of trust that the Nepali Congress has given,” he said.

He also urged leaders participating in the special convention to respect the party’s official decisions and move forward in unity. “When the party is united, everyone is respected, and everyone’s capacity and competence are utilized,” he said.

Mahat further clarified that there is a tradition within the Central Committee to discuss and reach conclusions on matters related to strengthening the party, and that parallel activities against party decisions are not in the party’s interest.
