Surendra Pandey Stresses Need for Democratic Leadership and Term Limits in UML
Kathmandu. Surendra Pandey, Vice Chairman of CPN-UML, has emphasized the need for developing democratic leadership within the party.
Addressing a youth gathering organized in the context of the CPN-UML's 11th General Convention, he stressed the importance of institutionalizing a process for selecting leadership that is worker-centric (activist-centric).
Mentioning that a leader-centric culture is taking root instead of an activist-centric one, Pandey said, "We have fostered a tradition where only people who gravitate around the leaders, and not those established among the party workers, are considered eligible for leadership. We are against this."
He insisted on developing a system where party workers identify and select leaders from their own fields based on merit and evaluation. According to Pandey, if such a system is established, no one will be able to weaken the party, and he expressed confidence that the UML will succeed in this "fight" at the General Convention.
Furthermore, he reiterated the demand that a provision preventing leadership from being repeated must be made mandatory within the party. "We want to lead this party on a democratic path.
For this, a provision must be included in the statute itself that the same person shall not remain in a responsibility for more than two terms. We are fighting for this," Pandey stated.
