NGO Federation of Nepal Condemns Planned Misinformation

The NGO Federation of Nepal has expressed serious concern over the deliberate spread of rumors, confusion, and accusations against non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society in the country's changing political environment.

The Federation firmly states that this planned distrust and accusation against Nepali civil society is an attack on democracy, the Constitution, and human rights, and considers the devaluation of civil society's historical role unacceptable.

In an appeal issued by President Arjun Bhattarai and General Secretary Devi Khadka, the Federation clarified that NGOs are not opponents of the state but collaborative partners in implementing state policies. They urged everyone to base their opinions on facts, emphasizing that unfounded accusations against civil society are an assault on the core values of democracy.

The Federation noted a historical trend of pressure in the name of control over freedom of expression and organization. However, recent comments from political circles, media, and individuals, especially after the 'Gen Z movement', have devalued the contributions of the civil society movement in Nepal.

The Federation warned that such trends seriously risk weakening constitutional rights, creating distrust, and institutional crisis. They stressed that NGOs are registered under law, are committed to democracy, human rights, and good governance, and work to implement government policies and ensure rights for marginalized communities.

Stating that civil society does not engage in direct power politics or partisan competition, the Federation highlighted its role in raising issues of good governance, accountability, transparency, and service delivery.

Regarding the 'Gen Z movement', the Federation called the youth's demands justified and urged the government to immediately implement e-governance and a robust monitoring system to curb corruption and improve service delivery.

Finally, the Federation strongly condemned the violent incidents and property damage during the movement and requested the Karki Commission and National Human Rights Commission to conduct an impartial investigation.NGO-Federation-Nepal-Press-Release-2-1762235320.jpg
