Nepal Marks Election Day Commemorating First General Election
Kathmandu. Election Day is being celebrated across the country today in memory of the historic day when the first general election began in Nepal. The Election Commission has been celebrating this day as Election Day to commemorate the general election that started on Falgun 7, 2015 BS.
The 2015 general election is considered the first significant phase of Nepal's democratic practice. In that election, the Nepali Congress gained a two-thirds majority, or 74 seats, while a total of 16 political parties participated. It was through this election that Nepali citizens received the opportunity to exercise sovereign franchise for the first time.
On the occasion of Election Day, various programs, interactions, public awareness campaigns, and advocacy programs are being conducted across the country today under the leadership of the Commission. The Commission stated that the programs have been organized specifically with the objectives of promoting voter education, ensuring clean and fair voting, and strengthening democratic practices.
Election Day began to be formally celebrated in Nepal in 2073 BS. This day has been celebrated every year as a memory of the historic turning point of democratic practice, marking the day the first election commenced.
This year's Election Day is being celebrated in an enthusiastic atmosphere across the country with a message to increase civic participation while enhancing public awareness toward democratic practices.
