Nepal 2025: A Year of Big Changes and Youth Protests
KATHMANDU – For Nepal, 2025 was a year filled with both excitement and big problems. Because of political fighting, there was a lot of damage across the country. Decisions made by the main parties, the UML and Congress, caused a lot of trouble in the government.
The "Gen Z" started a rebellion. This changed how people look at leaders and political parties. At the start of the year, the big parties fought a lot. This made people angry, which led to the Gen Z movement that challenged the old leaders.
Many people also went to the streets to ask for better rights and fair treatment. Women and different social groups worked hard to make sure their voices were heard in the government.
While there were some good ideas for reform, the country still struggled with corruption and a government that changed too often. The year 2025 showed that Nepal has a chance to build a better future, but it also faces many dangers.
Main Events of the Year:
The Government
At the start of the year, KP Sharma Oli became Prime Minister for the fourth time. He was supported by the UML and Nepali Congress parties. However, people felt he was being too strict with his power, which led to protests and damage.
King-era Supporters
On March 28, many people gathered in Kathmandu to ask for the King to return and for Nepal to become a Hindu nation. There was a fight between the protesters and the police. A journalist named Suresh Rajat Lost his life, and several leaders like Rabindra Mishra and Durga Prasai were arrested.
Teacher Protests
Teachers from all over Nepal came to Kathmandu to protest. They were unhappy with a new education law. They blocked the streets for weeks, school exams were cancelled, and the Education Minister, Bidya Bhattari, eventually quit.
The Big Crisis
The biggest problem started when the government banned social media like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. This made young people very angry.
Thousands of people came out to protest. They broke windows and set fire to government buildings like the Parliament and the Prime Minister’s office. About 70 people Lost their Life, and many were hurt.
Prime Minister Quits
Because of the huge protests, KP Sharma Oli resigned on September 9. This was a major event. For a short time, people thought the army might take over. However, President Ram Chandra Paudel helped form a new temporary government on September 12 led by Sushila Karki. The Parliament was closed, and new elections were planned.
Party News
Parties Joining Together: In November, 10 parties (including the Maoists led by Prachanda) decided to join together as one group.
Congress Party Trouble: The Nepali Congress party had a big internal fight about when to pick their new leaders. This left the party confused.
Youth Still Protesting
In late November, young groups went back to the streets because they were unhappy with the new leaders. Some are still protesting today.
Looking Forward
In December, the UML party chose KP Sharma Oli as their leader again. Also, Rabi Lamichhane was released from jail. Now, everyone is talking about whether Kulman Ghising, Rabi Lamichhane, and Balen Shah will work together for the next election.
