National Unity and Reconciliation Day: Remembering BP Koirala's Vision
Today, Nepal is celebrating National Unity and Reconciliation Day at a time when political divisions and disagreements are increasing.
As cooperation and mutual trust weaken in the country, experts say that the policy of reconciliation introduced by BP Koirala, Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister, is becoming relevant once again.
To mark this day, the Nepali Congress and its sister organizations are holding programs across the country. On Poush 16, 2033 BS, BP Koirala made the historic decision to return to Nepal from exile. Even though he was fighting against an autocratic system at the time, he put the country's interest first.
BP Koirala had closely watched regional events, such as Sikkim joining India. Fearing that Nepal’s national unity could also be at risk, he introduced the policy of reconciliation.
Despite facing jail time, exile, and political suppression after the Royal "coup," he chose dialogue and coexistence over revenge. This choice is still seen as an inspiring example for politics today.
Although he was arrested immediately after landing at the airport, history remembers that he never compromised on his political beliefs.
Today is not just a day to remember history; it is a chance for self-reflection. It is a time to seek dialogue and agreement amidst rising political tension and social division.
Leaders have expressed that democracy, nationality, and social harmony can only be strengthened if BP’s policy of reconciliation is put into practice.
