Monitoring of Free WiFi Expansion in Capital, Plans to Extend Service to Remote Areas

A team led by Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, monitored the free WiFi services operating in various public places in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Minister Kharel's team visited areas from the New Bus Park to Teaching Hospital, Pashupati Aryaghat premises, and up to Tribhuvan International Airport.

About a month and a half ago, the Ministry had pledged to operate free internet service in 19 sensitive public locations in the capital.

Following the monitoring, Minister Kharel stated that the initiative played an effective role in connecting the general public to digital access.

He mentioned that the project is moving forward through the collaboration of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority's leadership, along with Nepal Telecom, Ncell, WorldLink, Vianet, and other private sector service providers and the community.

According to Minister Kharel, the next plan is to expand the service to remote districts. He informed that preparations are underway to provide free WiFi facility in crowded public places in districts considered highly remote, such as Solukhumbu, Ramechhap, Rautahat, Gulmi, Jumla, Myagdi, and Baitadi.

He stated that the expansion of communication and internet in remote areas is a top priority for his ministry and Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
