Minister Yadav Emphasizes Sustainable and Scientific Management of Water Resources

Kathmandu – Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, has emphasized that adopting sustainable and scientific approaches in water supply, water resources, and irrigation sectors is a pressing need of the present time.
Addressing the inaugural program of the First Nepal Hydrogeological Conference 2025, organized by the Nepal Hydrogeological Association on Wednesday, Minister Yadav stated that studies and research for sustainable use of underground irrigation in agriculture should be advanced based on scientific evidence.
He said, “For the prosperity of the nation, it is necessary to focus on the use of groundwater, sustainable management, minimizing disasters caused by groundwater pollution, environmental degradation, climate change, and its impacts, along with important discussions and planning.”
Minister Yadav highlighted that since the primary need of citizens is easy access to drinking water and it is considered a fundamental basis for the country’s economic prosperity, it is necessary to advance work accordingly. He stressed the importance of adopting a scientific approach in the utilization, management, and conservation of water resources.
He noted that the deepening impacts of climate change and uncontrolled population growth have put immense pressure on surface water resources, which has directly led to the overexploitation of groundwater resources—a problem that could become a serious long-term challenge.
Minister Yadav also pointed out that groundwater directly affects the lives of millions of people in the Terai region of Nepal and expressed regret that its importance is still not widely understood.
“We often talk about rivers, ponds, and waterfalls flowing from the Himalayas, but a large part of our prosperity lies in the groundwater hidden beneath the soil,” he said. “It is an invisible yet invaluable resource, essential for agriculture, industry, and daily life.”
He expressed confidence that the suggestions and conclusions from this conference will be shared with the federal and provincial governments and will contribute to solving long-term issues, especially in areas facing drinking water shortages.
“I sincerely wish that this conference, organized with the aim of providing sustainable solutions for drinking water and contributing to overall development, achieves complete success and produces significant conclusions,” he added.
Ramkumar Shrestha, Director General of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management, informed that due to the impacts of climate change, hand pumps in the Terai have dried up, causing citizens in the Terai and other areas to face drinking water problems. He stated that the ministry and department are working in a planned manner to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions.
He said, “We are committed to providing immediate relief for the problems seen now, and we are already doing so. However, for long-term balanced water distribution and usage across the country, solid policy formulation and scientific studies are necessary.”
