Minister Kulman Ghising Inspects Flood and Landslide Damage in Kavrepalanchok
In Kathmandu, Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, made an on-site inspection of various wards in Roshi Rural Municipality and Namobuddha Municipality in Kavrepalanchok, which were damaged by continuous rains, floods, and landslides in Ashoj last year.
Following complaints that the damage to roads, bridges, drinking water facilities, and health posts in the area due to the flood had not been reconstructed, Minister Ghising, accompanied by a team including the Director General of the Department of Roads, the Director General of the Department of Local Infrastructure Development, and the Chief of the Irrigation Division, went for an inspection on Friday.
Minister Ghising stated that the reconstruction of the structures damaged by the Roshi River will be prioritised and work will be moved forward.
Mentioning that the current government's priority is to conduct elections, he stated that work is underway with budget allocation to ensure effective service delivery and the rapid completion of the rehabilitation and reconstruction of disaster-affected areas.
The continuous rain, floods, and landslides on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of last year damaged the roads on both sides of the permanent bridge at Phalamesanghu, which connects Wards 1, 2, and 3 of Roshi Rural Municipality, Wards 8 and 9 of Namobuddha Municipality, and the Mahabharat and Khanikhola Rural Municipalities. There is a possibility that the bridge itself could be swept away if the river banks in that area are not protected.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has already sent a proposal to the Ministry of Finance for budget agreement to advance the work under the disaster category.
The flood had swept away the suspension bridge located there. Due to the lack of a bridge, movement in the area is obstructed during the rainy season. The flood also completely swept away the ten-bed basic hospital.
Kunshang Lama, Mayor of Namobuddha Municipality, mentioned that the federal and provincial governments had assured that there would be no budget shortage for the reconstruction of disaster-affected structures, but the work has not been carried out accordingly.
