Jhapa Waste Project Turns into Trash, MP Claims Corruption
Kathmandu. Rastriya Prajatantra Party MP Khusbu Oli has drawn the attention of the Parliament regarding the dismal state of the waste management project operated in Kankai Municipality of Jhapa. Speaking during a special hour in Tuesday's meeting of the House of Representatives, she expressed serious concern, stating that the project, built with an investment of millions, has now turned into a scrapyard.
According to MP Oli, the project was constructed in Kankai Municipality-2 under the name 'Kankai Birta Arjun Renewable Energy and Waste Management Company Limited'. More than 210 million rupees have already been invested in the project, which included the financial participation of three municipalities, support from the World Bank and Alternative Energy, and investments from 745 consumers themselves.
However, she claimed that the project has not even been able to produce biogas worth 400 rupees a day. "There has been widespread corruption, and the machinery and equipment of the project have been stolen," she said.
MP Oli alleged that this project was built on the banks of the Sananka River without conducting a feasibility study. She argued that the current dismal state of the project, which was constructed without any study, confirms major irregularities. MP Oli immediately drew the government's attention to this incident and also urged the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority to conduct a serious investigation into the matter.
