Election Commission Reviews Errors in Proportional Representation Closed Lists
Kathmandu, Poush 17: The Election Commission has been calling political parties one by one to point out errors found in the closed lists submitted under the proportional representation system for the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21.
After reviewing the submitted lists and holding discussions with party representatives, the Commission stated that it will officially communicate with the concerned parties by Poush 20 to correct and resubmit the identified shortcomings.
Assistant Spokesperson of the Commission, Kul Bahadur GC, informed that discussions are being held with party representatives after examining whether the submitted closed lists have properly matched inclusive groups (clusters) and other required details.
He stated that discussions were held on Wednesday in the presence of representatives from 12 parties, and a schedule has been set to hold discussions with another 12 parties today as well.
A total of 64 political parties submitted their closed lists to the Commission on Poush 13 and 14. Among them, only 22 parties nominated candidates for all 110 seats. According to the list, an average of 60 parties have submitted candidacies per election symbol.
Similarly, 10 parties have submitted closed lists for the minimum of 11 seats. The Commission also stated that 10 parties have registered with a single election symbol.
Although 93 political parties had applied to contest under this system, only 64 parties ultimately submitted their closed lists. The Commission will provide time from Poush 21 to 27 for parties to correct and reconcile the submitted details.
According to Assistant Spokesperson GC, the Commission will verify the corrected closed lists from Poush 28 to Magh 3, and the final list will be published on Magh 20.
For this election system, the Election Officer’s Office has been established, where experts from statistics, technology, and legal fields are currently working.
