Education Minister Urges Local Governments to Pay Minimum Wage to School Staff
Education, Science, and Technology Minister Mahabir Pun has urged local governments to pay the minimum wage set by the government to school staff and child development teachers.
In a Facebook status on Tuesday, he stated that the Ministry of Education has already sent the salaries for child development teachers, school helpers, and school support staff through federal grants, and that the local governments must add the remaining amount so that it does not fall below the minimum remuneration set by the Government of Nepal.
He wrote:
“The Ministry of Education has already sent salaries of Rs. 12,000 for child development teachers, Rs. 10,000 for school helpers, and Rs. 15,000 for school support staff through federal grants.
The local governments should add the remaining amount so that it is not less than the minimum remuneration set by the Government of Nepal. The ministry has received information that almost 700 local governments have added to this amount and are paying the salary according to the minimum remuneration.
I would like to inform you that this is the responsibility of the local governments that have not paid the minimum wage. Do not be unjust to the child development teachers and staff. Where are the trade union leaders on this matter? Are they awake?”
He also mentioned that the ministry has been informed that almost 700 local governments have added to the salary to meet the minimum remuneration, and urged the local governments that have not paid the minimum wage to do so in time.
