Nagarik Shakti Nepal Demands Use of Devanagari on Embossed Number Plates
Kathmandu, Aug 21 – Nagarik Shakti Nepal has objected to the government’s decision to make embossed number plates mandatory only in English script. Issuing a statement, the organization claimed that the decision undermines the Nepali language, script, and national identity.
According to Subas Prasad Pandey, General Secretary of Nagarik Shakti Nepal, the Constitution recognizes the Nepali language in Devanagari script as the official language of government work, and excluding Devanagari from number plates is unconstitutional.
The organization has demanded that all vehicle number plates must include Nepali words and numerals in Devanagari, the current English-script plates be withdrawn and replaced, all records be maintained in Nepali, and expenses incurred through foreign companies be made public and investigated.
It has also warned that if these demands are not met, it will be compelled to launch legal actions and public pressure campaigns.
