Basnet: “Royalist Rise Linked to Failure to Amend Constitution”
Purna Basnet, the Chief of the Publicity and Publication Department of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, has stated that national problems cannot be solved without amending the constitution.
Speaking in the context of the party holding nationwide sit-ins, rallies, and protest meetings with placards marking various demands and issues, Basnet put forward the view that the constitution must be amended or rewritten to solve national problems.
Basnet said, "Amending the constitution is the first condition for addressing the 28 main demands and national issues that the party has been raising. Our experience and practice so far have shown that the country cannot be led on the path to prosperity without amending the constitution."
Basnet argues that there will be no political stability in the country until a directly elected executive presidential system is implemented.
He said, "Reforming the system of governance, redrawing electoral constituencies, making the provinces autonomous and empowered, and improving the electoral system are only possible through amending or rewriting the constitution."
He commented that all political forces must agree on amending the constitution to protect the gains achieved and achieve further progress.
It is his opinion that royalists and other regressive forces are active in the country because national problems were not solved by amending the constitution.
He stressed the need to formulate necessary laws to institutionalize the federal democratic republic, implement inclusive democracy and social justice, and perform other related tasks.
