KP Sharma Oli Calls 2026 the Year of Restoring Democracy and the Constitution

Kathmandu: CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has stated that 2026 must be the year for the resurrection of democracy and the constitution. He remarked that the democracy broken in 2025 and the constitution that was fragmented and encroached upon must be strengthened and uplifted in 2026.

Addressing the Overseas Nepali Forum (International Committee) virtually on Thursday evening on the occasion of the New Year 2026, Chairman Oli described 2025 as a painful year for Nepal and the Nepali people.

He stated that a major series of events to displace democracy in Nepal had begun in a serious manner, but due to the awareness of the Nepali people, regressive forces were unable to take that effort to their desired conclusion.

Chairman Oli said, "The fall of a popularly elected government means the collapse of democracy and the constitution in the country; it is the suppression, encroachment, and downfall of the people's sovereignty."

He clarified that the current government is unconstitutional and that the parliament was dissolved on the recommendation of an unauthorized person, emphasizing that this is not just a matter of changing the Prime Minister but an attack on the democratic system and process.

He noted that although the date for the election of the members of the House of Representatives has been fixed, an atmosphere for the election has not yet been created, and the government is not working toward creating such an environment. Oli pointed out the danger that the democratic process could be misused in the name of elections to destroy democracy.

He said, "If false cases are filed against leaders, a restless environment is created, looted weapons are not returned, those who orchestrated jailbreaks are led forward as leaders, attempts are made to capture booths, and voting does not take place without fear—then the election will be nothing more than a 'drama' to weaken democracy."
