Observation of World Cancer Day in Nepal

Kathmandu. Today, World Cancer Day is being observed in Nepal as well through various awareness programs. Every year on February 4, World Cancer Day is celebrated across the globe. This day has been observed with the objectives of reducing the millions of deaths caused by cancer, saving lives through timely identification and treatment, and increasing public awareness.

Due to various types of cancer, many of us have already lost relatives, friends, and neighbors. Because of expensive treatment, physical and mental pain, and long-term struggle, cancer remains a major challenge for human life today.

Even now, millions of people worldwide are battling cancer. According to studies, approximately 22 percent of total cancer deaths globally are caused by the consumption of tobacco products. Similarly, it is stated that 10 percent of deaths are caused by cancers resulting from excessive eating, lack of nutritious diet, alcohol consumption, lack of regular exercise, and various diseases and infections.

Apart from these, radiation and other infections are also considered major causes of cancer. In developing countries, there is a higher risk of cancer due to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human Papillomavirus.
