UNDO and MIT Foundation Launch Relief and Reconstruction Efforts in Nepal: Appeal for Support

Nepal – In the aftermath of the September 8 demonstrations led by Nepal’s young generation (Gen Z) against corruption and social media shutdown, numerous government structures, court buildings, ministries, hundreds of police stations, and businesses across the country were destroyed or burned. Official data on the total damage has yet to be released.

During the protests, around six dozen people lost their lives, and many others were injured, including police officers and demonstrators. Several families lost their homes and businesses, while many communities still face shortages of essential services. Government offices and service delivery structures have either been destroyed or rendered nonfunctional.

In response, United Nepali Diaspora Organization (UNDO) and The MIT Group Foundation (MITGF/ACFID) have jointly launched the Rebuilding Nepal Campaign to provide immediate relief and support reconstruction efforts.

UNDO, registered under Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in line with the NRN Act, is a diaspora-led organization of Nepalis abroad. More details are available at https://undo.org.np/ .

The MIT Group Foundation, accredited by ACFID and audited by the Australian Government, was founded by Dr. Shesh Ghale and Jamuna Gurung Ghale along with other Nepali-origin Australians. The foundation has long been involved in social service and development initiatives in Nepal. More information can be found at https://www.mitgf.org/.

This week, executives from both organizations met with the Government of Nepal, requesting a list of urgent priority areas for action. Based on field assessments, some relief efforts, such as reopening damaged police stations, have already begun. For this purpose, organizational bank accounts and a GoFundMe campaign have been launched.

The initiative will be led by the youth members of the diaspora, referred to as the Next Generation.

The campaign is seeking contributions for the following urgent needs:

Medical treatment for the injured

Essential supplies for affected areas, including clean water, medicine, and food

Volunteers for reconstruction, sanitation, animal welfare, and injured support

Research and repair projects to restore public spaces and community infrastructure

Rehabilitation of families who lost homes and small businesses

Both organizations assure that 100% of the funds collected will be used directly in Nepal’s affected areas, with all expenses transparently published on their websites. Long-term projects identified through ongoing research will be launched separately.

Supporters can contribute through the official GoFundMe link:
