The Vital Role of Parents in Transforming Local Education
Subject: The Future of Our Children and Our Responsibility Toward Community (Government) Schools
Dear Parents, Brothers, and Sisters,
Education is not just about recognizing letters or passing exams; it is the foundation for building a citizen's life. Today, we are worried about our children's future, but have we thought about the condition in which we have left the 'foundation' of that future—the government schools in our own communities?
We often raise questions about the quality of government schools. However, do those questions include a review of our own contributions? Through this open letter, I would like to place some serious matters before you:
Government Schools Belong to 'Citizens,' Not Just the 'Poor':
We have been harboring a wrong mindset that government schools are only for those who lack money. In reality, these schools are our shared assets. The state has arranged for qualified teachers and a curriculum through our own taxes. To neglect this is to disrespect our own rights and property.
Invest Time and Interest, Not Just Money:
When we pay thousands of rupees to private schools, we visit the school even for a child's minor mistake. But since there are no fees in government schools, we have left the children as if they are 'unclaimed.' Remember, the absence of fees does not mean an absence of responsibility. A child's future is determined by your time and interest, not by money.
Teachers and Physical Infrastructure Alone Are Not Enough:
The school has buildings, books, and trained teachers. However, until parents at home turn over the child's notebook and ask, "What did you learn today?", school education will not reach its full potential. Education is like a chariot where the school and parents are two wheels. The chariot cannot move forward with only one wheel.
Accountability and Ownership:
If teaching is not happening in the school or if the management is weak, it is your right to go there and ask questions. But that question becomes meaningful only when you yourself participate in school activities. It is necessary to increase our activeness in sitting on school management committees, participating in social audits, and providing constructive suggestions for improvement.
Change is Possible, and It Starts Today:
If we begin to show the same activeness, awareness regarding cleanliness, and regular dialogue with teachers in government schools as is shown in private schools, these schools can become excellent overnight. Our children can receive quality education at a lower cost within their own soil and culture.
In conclusion,
Let us start today by turning over our children's notebooks. Rather than cursing the government, learning to love the school in your own backyard and collaborating with the teachers there is true parenting. The key to making our children's future bright is in the hands of us parents.
"Strong support from teachers, students, and parents;
The transformation of government schools is in our hands."
