Demand for Prime Minister’s Resignation, Call for Alternative Government
Bhadra 23, Kathmandu — Today, Gen Z staged a historic protest across the country, including the capital. While hundreds of thousands of youths took to the streets in a peaceful demonstration, police repression left dozens injured by gunfire and hundreds more affected by heavy tear gas shelling.
According to eyewitnesses, the scene was even more terrifying than the incident in Tinkune. Tear gas was reportedly fired directly from rooftops, creating a fearful and chaotic atmosphere.
Participants in the protest said that such brutal suppression of a peaceful movement has ended the moral and political legitimacy of the current government.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued by Ravi Kiran Hamal, the Prime Minister has been urged to resign immediately. The statement also called on all political parties to pave the way for the formation of an alternative government. Security agencies were urged to step back from repressive actions and to respect the rights of citizens.
The statement warned, “If the government and security agencies do not abandon the path of suppression, conflict and instability will spread across the country, and the government will have to bear full responsibility.”
The presence of the new generation on the streets and their movement is being closely observed by the international community, civil society, and intellectuals. Analysts have described today’s protest as a historic moment that could mark a new political turn in Nepal.
