A Brief Meeting That Changed My View of Celebrities

Saroj K. Joshi

In the mid-1990s, while in Seattle, I attended a program supporting the Nargis Dutt Foundation. Many members of the Indian community were present, and I happened to be the only attendee from Nepal.

When Sunil Dutt arrived after a long drive, something immediately caught my attention. While most attendees were dressed formally in suits and ties, he appeared in simple jeans and a sweater. His humility stood out immediately.

During his brief speech, he spoke in a very honest and practical way. He said:

“I am a burger guy. Instead of fancy dinners, we could save money and donate more to the Nargis Foundation.”

He then continued with remarkable frankness:

“You all know corruption exists in many countries, and India is not an exception. Because of that, doubts can arise when money is collected. That is why I am not taking any money. Instead, please buy the medical equipment yourselves and send it wherever you want to donate on behalf of the Nargis Foundation. I will personally go, clear the customs, and ensure it reaches the hospitals with your message.”

In that brief meeting, I also got the chance to let him know that he was very popular in Nepal and that people there deeply loved his famous movie Mother India plus. He was genuinely surprised to hear this. I even suggested that he visit Nepal—and after our meeting, he really did make the trip!

He concluded by thanking everyone for being part of the Nargis Dutt Foundation and for their contributions.

Those words and gestures truly struck my mind. I thought to myself—what an honest, fair, and remarkable person Sunil Dutt was. He was not only a celebrated actor but also a man deeply devoted to the memory of Nargis Dutt and committed to helping others with full energy, vision, and effort.

Although my interaction with him was brief, I feel fortunate that I was once part of that important meeting supporting the Nargis Foundation. That experience changed my perception of celebrity. It reminded me that true greatness lies not in fame, but in humility, integrity, and sincere dedication to serving humanity.
