Mahesh Basnet Faces Criticism Over Abusive Responses and Controversial Remarks

Kathmandu — CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has come under heavy criticism for responding in an abusive and threatening manner to young people who post critical comments on his social media.
Recently, Bishal Koirala commented on one of Basnet’s posts, accusing him of spreading corruption across the country. In reply, Basnet used foul language and issued threats, challenging Koirala to “come over” or share his location. He even went so far as to say, “Put a khukuri (traditional Nepali knife) between us — if I’m guilty, cut me, if not, you’ll be cut.”
Basnet has frequently been accused of replying to criticism on his previous posts also in a rude style. In a recent video as well, he labeled the Gen Z youths who he claims were involved in burning his house — as “terrorists.”
Young people have strongly condemned such behavior, saying it is unbecoming of a responsible political leader. They have urged Basnet to adopt a more civil and respectful tone in his public conduct.
