Attack on Independent Press is Condemnable: Kathmandu Branch

Kathmandu — The Kathmandu Branch of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over the attack on journalists during the “Gen Z” movement in Babarmahal and New Baneshwor areas of Kathmandu.
In a statement issued by Kathmandu Branch secretary Ramesh Kumar Bohora, it was mentioned that during news coverage of the protest, Kantipur Television journalist Shyam Shrestha, Naya Patrika photojournalist Dipendra Dhungana, and Nepal Press journalist Umesh Karki were injured after being shot by police — a tragic and condemnable incident.
The chapter stated that the attack on the independent press is a direct assault on democracy and freedom of expression. It demanded that the government immediately arrest those responsible and take legal action. It also urged the government to prioritize the safety of journalists and media, ensuring an environment where they can collect news freely and without fear.
Furthermore, the chapter requested journalists to engage in reporting only with press ID cards and jackets marked with “PRESS,” and called on all media professionals to unite and resist any suppression of the press.
