Uncertainty Over House of Representatives Election Persists: Purna Basnet

Purna Basnet, the Publicity Department Chief of the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, has stated that doubts remain over whether the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 will actually take place.

Basnet mentioned that while the party is simultaneously moving forward with protest programs, election preparations, and the candidate selection process, it is currently impossible to say with certainty what will happen regarding the upcoming polls.

Basnet remarked, "It is unclear whether the government intends to conduct the election in a single phase across the country or in multiple phases. I do not believe the weather conditions will be favorable for a single-phase election."

He further noted that the government's current activities do not inspire confidence that the election will occur. He argued that an election held under the status quo, without amending the constitution, would serve no purpose.

Basnet also drew the government's attention to the prevailing public concern regarding how security will be guaranteed during the election period.

He urged the government to take political parties into confidence and create a conducive environment for the polls. He stated that if the current government’s sole objective is to pull the 2084 elections forward to 2082, then reinstating the House of Representatives would be more beneficial for the country than holding new elections.
