Trekking Guide and Porter Guide Training Concludes in Pokhara

Pokhara – A trekking guide and porter guide training organized by the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Gandaki concluded in Pokhara. The month-long training saw 221 participants receive trekking guide certificates, while 60 participants were awarded porter guide certificates.

At the closing ceremony held on Tuesday, Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Surendra Raj Pandey, handed out certificates to the trainees. He emphasized that skilled human resources are a crucial component of the tourism sector and noted that trekking guides and porters play the role of ambassadors in promoting Nepal internationally. Pandey also mentioned that, as many trekking routes are being overused, the provincial government has allocated a budget for developing alternative routes.

Minister for Industry and Tourism of Gandaki Province, Mitralal Basyal, expressed satisfaction that the training has produced skilled manpower for the tourism market. He added that as Pokhara is the provincial capital, collaboration among all stakeholders is essential for further tourism development.

Bishnubahadur Bhattarai, Chairperson of Ward No. 6 of Pokhara Metropolitan City, highlighted the need to identify new trekking routes to ensure a proper strategy for guiding tourists. Maniraj Lamichhane, Chief of Nepal Tourism Board, Gandaki Office, noted that increasing tourist numbers require skilled guides for trekking activities. Ajay Dhakal, Department Head at the Nepal Tourism and Hotel Management Institute (NATHUM), said the training has produced competent manpower and strengthened the trekking business in Gandaki Province. He emphasized that skilled guides can provide tourists with clear knowledge about Nepal, enhancing its positive image globally.

TAAN Gandaki Chairperson Krishna Prasad Acharya urged the government to implement mandatory trekking guide provisions and highlighted the need to establish shelters along trekking routes.

Trainee Indra Bahadur Rai shared that the training motivated him to contribute more to the tourism sector.

The training, organized in collaboration with NATHUM and promoted by the Nepal Tourism Board Gandaki, started on 26 Jestha at Tal Barahi Secondary School, Pokhara–6, Baidam.

The closing program was also attended by Tarannath Pahari, Chairperson of Pokhara Tourism Council, senior tourism entrepreneur Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai, former TAAN Gandaki Chairperson Dambar Bahadur KC, TAAN Gandaki Vice-Chair Tirtha Raj Subedi, and other officials. The program was conducted by TAAN Gandaki Secretary Gopal Krishna Sangroula.
