Speaker Attempting Political Coup: Purna Basnet

Kathmandu — Purna Basnet, head of the publicity department of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, has accused Speaker Devraj Ghimire of attempting to carry out a political coup.
Speaking in response to Speaker Ghimire’s discussion with party representatives on the issue of reinstating the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Basnet made the accusation.
Basnet said, “The dissolution of the House of Representatives and the formation of the current government are the outcomes of the GenZ Movement. The mandate of the movement was to elect a directly elected executive head and to take action against corruption.
Therefore, the debate on reinstating the dissolved Parliament is meaningless. The Speaker seems to be attempting a political conspiracy.”
He emphasized that the government should create a suitable environment for elections by taking all political parties into confidence while embracing the spirit of the GenZ Movement.
According to him, the government must leave no effort undone to ensure the elections are held in a fair, impartial, and fearless environment.
Basnet further stated that the election process should proceed according to the schedule set by the Election Commission.
The Commission is holding discussions today with all political parties regarding the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 (March 5, 2026).
