Renewed Tension at Siraha Jail: 23 Prisoners Detained

Rahul Rai / Siraha

Siraha. Siraha Jail has once again become a center of controversy and tension. On Tuesday morning, police took 23 prisoners into custody on charges of attempting to seize control of the prison's internal administration.

According to Siraha Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel, two days ago, some prisoners forcibly removed watchman Prem Chaudhary in an attempt to take over the internal management of the prison. He informed that after assessing the risk of further clashes and insecurity following that incident, 23 people were detained and are currently being held in police custody.

Chief District Officer Paudel stated that necessary legal procedures will be initiated against the detained prisoners. He mentioned that permission has been requested from the relevant department, and once received, a decision will be made regarding transferring them to other prisons.

Siraha Jail has previously witnessed repeated incidents of factionalism, beatings, and internal clashes. The prison frequently becomes tense due to allegations of management weaknesses and collusion with security personnel.

Previously, during a joint security operation conducted on magh 26, a handmade pistol and two rounds of ammunition were recovered from inside the prison. Police claim the weapon was linked to an influential prisoner, Indrajit Yadav. During that same operation, 13 people, including Yadav, were detained and transferred to other prisons.

Following Indrajit Yadav's arrest, prisoners had staged protests for two days. Recent events are raising serious questions about the security, management, and discipline of Siraha Jail.
