Purna Basnet Calls for Constitution Rewrite, Says Current Crisis Rooted in Constitution

Kathmandu – Purna Basnet, Chief of the Publicity Department of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal, has stated that Nepal’s Constitution must be rewritten to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

Basnet argued that the Constitution, promulgated on Asoj 3, 2072 BS, was incomplete and inadequate from the very beginning. He stressed that only through rewriting the Constitution can the country find a way out of the prevailing crisis.

“The root cause of the current national crisis is the Constitution. The adopted system of governance and electoral process cannot ensure good governance and stability. Both Congress and Communist regimes have already exposed the Constitution’s distorted form before the people. Further explanation is unnecessary,” Basnet remarked.

Recalling his detention during protests demanding a people-centric and widely acceptable Constitution, Basnet maintained that no geography, community, or region should be excluded if the country seeks stability and prosperity.

He further claimed that national unity can only be strengthened if the Constitution is inclusive and acceptable to all. Addressing the mandate of the Gen-Z movement, Basnet said constitutional amendment has now become inevitable.
